Wafer Paper Circles Cake Tutorials
How to Use Wafer Paper Circles (Fan Style Cake Design)
What You’ll Need
- Wafer paper circles (2" pre-cut)
- Small bowl of water
- Food-safe brush or clean fingertip
- Buttercream frosted cake (chilled slightly works best)
Step 1: Create the Wafer Fan
- Take 4 wafer circles
- Lightly dab a small amount of water on the center of one circle
- Overlap the next circle slightly and press gently to stick
- Repeat until all 4 circles are connected in a row
- Gently fan them out into a curved shape
- Let sit for 10–20 seconds to set
💡 Less water is better — too much will cause tearing
Step 2: Apply to Cake
- Lightly press the base of the fan into your buttercream
- Hold for a few seconds until secure
- Continue placing fans around the cake
Step 3: Build the Design
- Slightly overlap each fan for a full, layered look
- Work in rows (bottom to top or side to side)
- Continue until the cake is fully covered
Pro Tips
- Use fresh buttercream (not crusted) for best adhesion
- Keep wafer paper dry until ready to use
- If needed, use a tiny bit of buttercream behind the fan for extra hold
- Store finished cake in a cool, dry environment
Final Look
Your cake will have a textured, floral / ruffle effect using edible wafer fans ✨
