Burn-Away Cakes
Burn-away cakes are a trending and eye-catching way to reveal a hidden message or image. This technique uses a top edible layer that gently burns away to reveal a second design underneath—perfect for birthdays, surprises, and unforgettable moments.
Our burn-away sheets are designed to be easy to use, beginner-friendly, and compatible with common cake decorating methods.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
• Burn-away wafer sheet (top layer)
• Edible sugar sheet (bottom image)
• Frosted cake (buttercream or fondant)
• Lighter or flame source
• Tweezers (optional for control)
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare Your Cake
Make sure your cake is fully frosted and smooth. A flat surface works best for clean layering.
2. Apply the Bottom Image (Sugar Sheet)
Place your sugar sheet directly onto the cake. Smooth it gently to remove air bubbles.
3. Add the Burn-Away Layer
Place the wafer paper sheet directly on top of the sugar sheet. Align it carefully so the reveal looks centered and clean.
4. Let It Set
Allow the layers to sit for a few minutes so everything adheres properly before lighting.
5. Light the Top Layer
Using a lighter, carefully ignite the edge of the wafer paper. The top layer will burn away, revealing the image underneath.
6. Enjoy the Reveal
Let the flame burn naturally across the design. Do not rush it—this is the moment everyone loves.
SAFETY TIPS (VERY IMPORTANT)
• Always light in a controlled environment
• Keep a small cup of water nearby just in case
• Do not leave the cake unattended while burning
• Keep away from children until flame is fully out
• Use small, controlled ignition—no large flames
FAQ
What is a burn-away cake?
A cake design that uses a thin edible top layer that burns away to reveal a hidden message or image underneath.
Are the sheets edible?
Yes. Both the wafer paper and sugar sheets are made with food-safe, edible materials.
Will the flame damage the cake?
No—when done correctly, the flame only burns the top wafer layer and does not affect the cake underneath.
Can beginners do this?
Yes! This method is beginner-friendly and only requires simple tools and careful handling.
What type of frosting works best?
Smooth buttercream or fondant works best for proper adhesion and a clean finish.
Can I customize the design?
Yes! You can order custom messages, images, or themed designs to match your event.
Why isn’t my sheet burning properly?
This usually happens if there is too much moisture. Make sure the wafer sheet is dry and not pressed into wet frosting.
Is it safe to use indoors?
Yes, but always use caution, keep the flame controlled, and avoid flammable surroundings.
